The English-taught European Joint Master's Programme in English and American Studies is a full-time master's programme. The universities in the consortium work together to provide you with a high-quality international curriculum including regional aspects.
In the programme, you have the opportunity to choose the specialization field that interests you the most: literature, linguistics and cultural studies.
The programme is organised as a Joint Programme and offered by 8 universities. You can choose one of the degree-awarding universities as your entrance university where you will be enrolled and one of the degree-awarding universities and mobility partners in the consortium as your mobility university for the mandatory mobility semester.
The European Joint Master's Programme in English and American Studies comprises 120 ECTS credits corresponding to a period of study of at least four semesters or two years. As a student of the Master’s programme you have to earn at least 60 ECTS at your entrance university (30 ECTS in courses and 30 ECTS for your Master’s Thesis) and you have to earn at least 30 ECTS at your mobility university during the integrated mobility semester as a mandatory requirement for graduation.

Admission requirements
You need a Bachelor’s degree or a degree from an equivalent programme of at least 180 ECTS credits in a field relevant to the Joint Master’s Programme in the Humanities including graduates of modern and classical languages.
Applicants with degrees in other languages who possess a degree in philology may be considered if their preparation is deemed appropriate by both the Joint Master's Programme and the specific institution to which they are applying for admission as their entrance university.
Because this is an English-taught programme, English language proficiency must be proven.
English language proficiency
1) Confirmation of English proficiency through either a completed bachelor or master’s programme studied in the following English-speaking countries Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom, USA.
2) English certificate:
- Cambridge CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English) grades C, B, A
- Cambridge CAE (Certificate of Advanced English) PASS
- Michigan ECPE (Examination for the Certificate of Proficiency in English) PASS
- Trinity ISE 3 (Integrated Skills in English) PASS
- Pearson PTE Academic MINIMUM SCORE 76
- IELTS Academic MINIMUM OVERALL SCORE 7
- TOEFL iBT MINIMUM SCORE 98
Comment: Applicants must include with their application either an approved language certificate or a confirmation of registration for a language test. The language test must be taken before the selection meeting and the scores must be available at the selection meeting at the latest.
Please note that the provided language certificates must not be older than 2 years wherefore the 2 years will be counted back from the start date of the application. No English proficiency letter or other certificates will be accepted.

Partner universities
The universities in the consortium, University of Bamberg, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, University of Graz, Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Université Paris Cité, University of Pécs, The City Colleage of New York, and Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, work together to guarantee a high-quality international curriculum with regional aspects. Each university offers the possibility of specialized academic training in the field of English and American studies, focusing on one of the three emphases of the programme: literature, linguistic and cultural studies.
You can choose six universities of the consortium (Bamberg, Barcelona, Graz, Krakow, Paris, Venice) as your entrance university and enroll there as a student of the European Joint Master’s Programme in English and American Studies. The entrance university is defined as the university where you start and finish the programme. These universities are degree-awarding universities within the consortium.
The University of Pécs and The City College of New York are mobility partners. You can spend your mandatory mobility semester in Pécs and New York, but you cannot enroll there as your entrance university.
Please note that you can spend your mandatory mobility semester at any of the eight partner universities (except your entrance university).

Special regulations for the Double Degree Agreement with Barcelona
The Joint Master's Programme is currently being expanded by providing students with the opportunity of receiving a double degree between the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and the Universities of Bamberg, Graz and Venice. The consortium of this Joint Master's Programme plans to introduce this option starting in the academic years 2024/25 and 2025/26, depending on the respective partner university.
Barcelona & Bamberg (from 2024/25): Bamberg students will spend their third semester of their second year at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), where they will complete 30 ECTS of coursework, with an additional 15 ECTS validated from prior coursework at the University of Bamberg (UoB). They will also be required to write an MA dissertation (min. 45 pages, 15 ECTS) on a topic agreed upon with their supervisor at the UAB. The dissertation will be recognized as part of the restricted elective requirement at the UoB and will be written in addition to the final degree thesis that students are required to write for the UoB.
Barcelona students will spend the third semester of their second year at the University of Bamberg (UoB), where they will complete 30 ECTS of courswork. In their fourth semester, they will also complete a final degree thesis (30 ECTS) on a topic agreed upon with their UoB supervisor. Students will write this thesis in addition to the MA dissertation required by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.
Barcelona & Graz: This double degree option is expected to be introduced starting in the academic year 2025/26. Further information on this double degree option will be published on this website in the spring semester 2025.
Barcelona & Venice (from 2024/25): Ca’ Foscari University of Venice students will spend the third semester of their second year at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), where they will complete 30 ECTS of coursework, with an additional 15 ECTS validated from prior coursework at Ca’ Foscari. They will also be required to write an MA dissertation (15 ECTS) on a topic agreed upon with their UAB supervisor, which will be completed in addition to the final degree thesis (30 ECTS) required by Ca’ Foscari University of Venice.
Barcelona students will spend the third semester of their second year at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, completing 30 ECTS of coursework. They will also write a final degree thesis (30 ECTS) on a topic agreed upon with their Ca’ Foscari supervisor. Students will write this thesis in addition to the MA dissertation required by UAB.
